Where to Stay in Florence with Kids – A Local Mom’s Guide

Are you coming to Florence with your family and feeling overwhelmed trying to sort through all of the areas and places you could stay?

Although Florence’s historic center is small (you can easily explore it all on foot, even with kids), there are many different neighborhoods and accommodation options.

And there are plenty of ‘best places to stay’ in Florence lists online, but my list is based on my firsthand experience staying at and visiting these family apartments and family rooms.

I’m a mamma of three living just outside of Florence, and we spend a lot of time in the city.  Usually we’re exploring for the day or evening, but we also have ‘staycations’ and spend the night in the city.  I’m also a trip planner (for over two decades) and I’ve helped families book stays in Florence more times than I can count.

I have personally checked (or re-checked) all of these apartments and family rooms in Florence.  After working in tourism as a guide and trip planner, I know what families are looking for and I’ve checked each of these to make sure they have what you need (and if they don’t, it’s noted so you can decide if you’re ok without it).

Note:  I have not visited NUMA Palazzo Belfiore recently, but I kept it on my list based on its history as a great group of family apartments for my clients and friends.

I hope my experience helps you feel comfortable booking a place for your family to stay in Florence.  Let me know if you have any questions – I’m happy to help you find the perfect place!

Things to Think About When Booking Family Acccommodations in Florence

Before we get into the recommendations, let’s take a look at a few things that are important to keep in mind when you’re booking your family stay in Florence.

  • Location, location, location.  Is it close to what you want to see with your family?  I recommend staying inside or within walking distance of the historic center.  Florence isn’t like other Italian cities (think Rome or Milan) that require you to use transportation at some point.  You can walk everywhere, so take advantage of it here.
  • What do you want to do during your trip?  For example, if you want to ‘live’ in Florence for a week, make sure your place has space for relaxing so you can come ‘home’ during the day to hang out, have a meal, etc.  If you’re on a quick trip to Florence to see the main sites and then leave, a smaller place is fine (as you won’t be in it much).
  • Do you like to eat out?  If so, don’t worry about a kitchen – although they can be handy for having relaxed morning breakfasts.
  • Do you need parking?  If possible, avoid having a car in Florence.  But, if you do need to park, be sure to arrange with your accommodation.  The historic center has ZTLs (limited traffic zones), so the garage you park in will notify the authorities so you don’t get fined.
  • Do you want to be near a playground?  Unfortunately, we don’t have tons of amazing playgrounds in the historic center.  I’ve marked our favorites on the map so you can get an idea of walking distance from the apartments and hotels.
  • Which amenities do you need?  Cribs/cots, high chairs, laundry, etc.
  • Will you have a stroller?  You will almost always need to bring it into your room.  Occasionally you will be able to leave it in the hallway or a common area of the hotel or apartment.
  • When to book.  Try to avoid booking last minute.  And avoid Italian holidays when possible.  Family-friendly properties aren’t a dime a dozen in Florence.
  • Do you want breakfast included?  Often hotels and apartments have agreements with local bars or cafés near the property.  If you’ve got a kitchen, it’s easy to stock up at the grocery store so you can have a relaxed breakfast in the morning.
  • Do you want a reception?  Many places in Florence (especially apartments) don’t have a reception, but you can usually get help via WhatsApp or a phone call.
  • Is there an elevator?  If you’re traveling with a stroller, it’s helpful to have an elevator!  Otherwise, are you ok carrying it up and down stairs?
  • Is there a balcony?  If you’re worried about kids climbing, skip the balcony apartments and rooms.
  • Where’s the closest grocery store?  Whether you need to grab breakfast supplies or diapers for your toddler, it’s important to be near a grocery store.  Each of the places on my list have a small grocery store within walking distance.  I’ve listed where they are, and you can also search for a ‘supermercato’ on Google Maps.
  • Will you need to do laundry?  Most of the places on my list have either a washing machine in the apartment.  If not, there’s laundry on-site or very close by.
  • Are you seeking character?  Some family friendly places in Florence are a bit more generic, but there are exceptions.

Best Neighborhoods to Stay in When Visiting Florence with Kids

I highly recommend staying in the historic center of Florence if you’re visiting with kids.  Yes, you can stay in other neighborhoods and take public transportation into the center, but Florence is so walkable and small, it’s easiest to just stay in the center.

Graphic map of Florence, Italy with areas and major sites highlighted.
  • Duomo/Center – Most convenient for reaching main sites and shops, but can be crowded and noisy (fortunately, double-paned windows are becoming the standard).  This is my favorite place for quick trips with kids because you can walk out of your door and reach everything easily on foot.  It’s also easy to go back to your room if someone needs to nap, get a snack, etc.
  • Santo Spirito & San Frediano (Oltrarno) – Calmer atmosphere, excellent restaurants and more green space.
  • Santa Croce & Sant’Ambrogio – Pedestrian streets and local living in Sant’Ambrogio.
  • San Marco & Santissima Annunziata – Best budget options, quieter and more of a walk to main sites.
  • San Niccolò & Piazzale Michelangelo – Further away, but nice views in the hills.  You could walk along the river to the large Anconella park and playground.
  • Santa Maria Novella – Best location if you need to catch a train.  Otherwise, it’s not my preferred area but the apartments and rooms on my list make it worth staying here.

Family Apartments & Rooms in Florence

After this table, I’ve listed the apartments (in no particular order) with complete descriptions.

*Final person is a baby or toddler in a portable crib.  Also, the first number is the number of people that sleep with a bed.  The remaining spots are with a sofa bed.  For example, 2-5* means two people sleep on a real bed(s), two people sleep on a sofa bed, and a baby or toddler can sleep in a crib.  If you don’t want to sleep on a sofa bed, make sure the first number fits your group.

Family Safety:
Windows and balcony doors in Italy have different methods for closing and locking (often with a twist of the handle or a special latch).  Always keep an eye on small children and be sure to keep chairs away from windows and balcony railings so kids can’t climb up to the level of the window or top of the railing.  If windows and balconies make you nervous, book a first-floor apartment or room.

I’ve yet to see outlet plug covers at apartments and hotels in Italy, and it’s tough to prepare for them as we have a few different types of outlets. These outlet covers are the ones I used in Italy when my children were babies. Read more about Electricity and Adapters in Italy.

Map of Family-Friendly Places to Stay in Florence

Relais Piazza Signoria Apartments

Via Vacchereccia, 3

Relais Piazza Signoria –> info and rates.

Relais Piazza Signoria’s apartments are in a multi-story building on Piazza della Signoria.  The functional apartments are perfect if you want to be in Florence with your family – when you walk out of Relais Piazza Signoria’s building, you’re in Piazza della Signoria.

There are 8 apartments suitable for families on site – 4 executive apartments, and 4 classic apartments.  The only difference between the two types is that executive apartments have a lovely view of Florence rooftops.  The apartments aren’t super light-filled, but the executives will give you a little extra light if you need it (although you’ll likely be out exploring Florence during the daylight hours!).

There is a bit of a ‘business stay’ feel, but the location more than makes up for it, and the staff at reception is helpful and kind.

Each apartment has a separate bedroom area with a queen size bed and a living area that has a pull-out murphy bed.  You can sleep a 5th person, a small child, in a crib.

There are separate sleeping places for kids and adults – you can just close the door to the bedroom.

Each apartment has a small kitchen and a table with chairs so you can have breakfast at your leisure when you get up.  Or, the hotel has connections with a couple of places for breakfast, just steps away.  The hotel only has one high-chair, so if you need it, ask when you reserved your stay.  Likewise with cribs, as they only have three.

Location

  • ZTL – In the ZTL
  • Parking – In a garage nearby.  Cost is €40 for 24 hours, with free pick up and drop off.
  • Distance from SMN train station – 15-20 minute walk with kids.
  • Neighborhood – In Piazza della Signoria.  The piazza is full of people, but it’s a great place for kids to run around a bit, look at the horses, or check out the statues.  You’re close to everything – including restaurants, museums, and famous sites.
  • Walkable – Yes!  You can get everywhere you want to go on foot.

Family Safety

  • Windows and balconies – The windows close, and you could also close the shutters.  If you’re staying in a room with a small balcony, you could choose to keep the door closed.

Miscellaneous

  • Reception – Staffed reception from 9:00-17:00.
  • Laundry – Coin-operated laundromat next to the Bargello.
  • Noise – I found it to be very quiet, considering it’s right on Piazza della Signoria.  The windows have double glass panels to keep the noise out.
  • Heat & Airconditioning – Both
  • Elevator – There is an elevator, but it’s tiny (can barely fit two adults).  You can also use the stone stairs.
  • Strollers – If you have a stroller, you’ll need to fold it up to bring it in the elevator.  You’ll need to go to at least the first floor (requiring some steps).  If you think you’ll be coming back to the room with a napping baby or toddler, this could be a problem.
  • Crib available – Yes, but only 3
  • High chair available – Yes, but only 1
  • Luggage drop off and storage – If you arrive early, you can leave your luggage at reception before check-in.  Same for leaving luggage after you check out (but remember to pick it up before 17:00 when reception closes!).
  • Grocery Store – A few small grocery stores are locating within a 5-minute walk.

Coco Apartments – Via Faenza

Via Faenza, 54

Coco Apartments – Via Faenza -> info and rates.

Coco Apartments have apartments in multiple locations in Florence.  This group is located in a lovely, plant-filled courtyard not far from the Florence train station.  It’s convenient if you’re arriving by train, as it’s a less than 10-minute walk to the apartment (although you can also hop in a taxi).

There are 8 family apartments available, and they can sleep 4 people plus a crib or a foldable bed (works for little kids up to 3 or 4 years old).

The apartments are all light-filled, spotless, and have kitchens and dining areas.  Some have small terraces, while others have balconies.

I love this location, even though I’m not usually a fan of locations near the train station – it’s quiet, and the internal courtyard feels miles from the busy city center.

Good To Know:  The Coco group in Florence is partnered with Coco-Mat Mattresses, so you can count on a comfy bed!

Bargello Apartment -> info and rates.

This elegant apartment is centrally-located and has plenty of space for a large family.  Up to 7 can sleep in this 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment.

The kitchen, large dining table, and washing machine make it a convenient base for visiting Firenze.  I love the small internal courtyard that the kitchen looks over and one of the bedrooms faces.

Location

Panerai – Family Rooms

Via dei Servi, 49

Panerai Family Rooms -> info and rates.

This hotel is on a pedestrian street a stone’s throw (if you have a good arm) from the Duomo.

There are two room options that are suitable for families in this historic building.

The first is a family room with an open floor plan.  It has three beds in the room – one double and two singles.  You could also add a crib for a small child.  The best part about this room is that you can stick your head out the window and see the Duomo!

The second option is a ‘paired’ rooming setup – a room with a queen bed and across the hall (at arm’s length), a larger room with a queen bed, a single bed, and a 1-person sofa bed.  This room also has a bathroom (but the queen room across the hall doesn’t) and it looks out onto a green internal courtyard.  So, sharing these two rooms, you could sleep a family of 6.

It’s partnered with Coco, so the beds are comfortable!

Al Campanile’s Teatro apartment is another excellent pick right in the historic center of Florence.

The Teatro apartment can sleep 4-5 people.  There is one bedroom and there’s a 2-person sofa bed in the living area.  They will also bring in a crib for a baby or toddler.

There’s also a kitchen and incredible views of the Duomo from the kid-friendly panoramic balcony – the walls of the balcony are high, so it takes some stress away from you as a parent!

Coco Apartments – Via della Scala

Via della Scala, 105

Coco Apartments – Via della Scala -> info and rates.

This location, on the western side of the Florence train station, has apartments and family rooms that fit from 4-8 people.

The walk along Via della Scala to the historic center isn’t my favorite, as the road can be busy, but there’s a big sidewalk so it’s easy to get to the center with a stroller.

The building has 4 apartments and a family room.

My favorite apartments for families here are the upstairs apartment and the loft apartment.

The upstairs apartment is light-filled, cozy, and the perfect place to relax after a busy day exploring Florence.  You can sleep up to 6 – 2 in the queen bedroom, plus 3 in the living room in a queen sofa bed and a single sofa bed, and you could also add a crib for a baby or toddler.

The loft apartment is best for families with older children, because there are stairs and low railings in the multi-level apartment.  It definitely has the ‘cool’ factor and would make an ideal base for a multi-day family stay in Florence.  It sleeps 8 (3 queen beds and a queen sofa bed) and has 2 bathrooms.

Location

  • ZTL – In the ZTL
  • Parking – Private parking available in a small garage next to the apartments (so convenient!) for €20-30/night.
  • Distance from SMN train station – Less than 10-minute walk with kids.  You’re also close to the tram stop, which can take you to the Florence airport.
  • Neighborhood – Near the train station, on Via della Scala.  You’ll probably want to head to the center for shops, cafés, and restaurants, which are a 10 minute walk away down Via della Scala.  You’re also about a 15-minute walk from the Parco delle Cascine, which has a couple of playgrounds and walking paths along the Arno River.
  • Walkable – Yes!  You can get everywhere you want to go on foot.

Family Safety

  • Windows and balconies – If you’re staying in an apartment with a window or balcony, you can keep the shutters closed.  Or, ask for the first-floor apartment.

Miscellaneous

  • Reception – No reception but you’re warmly welcomed by staff, and they are available by phone or messages if needed.
  • Laundry – There’s a laundromat steps away on Via della Scala.
  • Noise – Very quiet, except for a bit of noise in the lower apartment’s main bedroom that’s on Via della Scala.
  • Heat & Airconditioning – Both
  • Elevator or stairs – Stairs to upper floor apartments, the family room, and the loft apartments.  The steps are narrow.  There is one bottom floor apartment that doesn’t have stairs.
  • Strollers – Store in your apartment or just outside the apartment door, which means you’ll need to carry it up steps.  There’s not enough room in the building entryway to store them.
  • Crib available – Yes
  • High chair available – Yes
  • Luggage drop off and storage – No
  • Grocery Store – Carrefour Express, about a 5-minute walk

Canto Rivolto Apartment

Via del Canto Rivolto, 1

Canto Rivolto Apartment -> info and rates.

This apartment, set in a labyrinth of tiny streets in the historic center, feels a bit like a labyrinth itself.  It’s in a historic building, and the owners have kept the layout as it was.  The living area is one of my favorite spots in the apartment, and it’s a perfect place to let the kids play and unwind after a busy day in Florence.  Up to 7 can sleep in the apartment, in 3 bedrooms.  There are 2 bathrooms, but one just has a toilet and sink (still handy if you’re traveling with a big group).

There are also amenities like a full kitchen, and a washing machine, and there’s enough space to move around and feel comfortable during your stay.

The owners have explained everything in their welcome booklet and they’re available if you have any questions.

Tornabuoni Apartment

Via delle Terme, 25

Tornabuoni Apartment -> info and rates.

This apartment is a great option for a large family, and since it’s on the first floor (just one set of stairs), it’s not difficult to navigate if you’ve got a stroller.  There are two bedrooms with queen beds and there’s a queen sofa bed in the living area, so 6 can sleep comfortably.  And, you can always add a crib for a baby or toddler.

There’s a small but functional kitchen and a dining area.  Its central location makes it a perfect spot to return to during the day if someone needs to nap!

The owners have explained everything in their welcome booklet and they’re available if you have any questions.

Peruzzi Residences

Piazza dei Peruzzi, 4

Peruzzi Residences -> info and rates.

I love the décor in the Peruzzi Residences rooms.  It feels like you’re staying in your cool Italian uncle’s house.  The rooms that have additional sofa beds that and the mezzanine apartment are best for families.  You could sleep 4 here plus a baby or toddler in a crib.

The common areas are so nice to have.  Kids can read a book on the couch while mamma and/or papà sip on the family’s wines at the complimentary evening tastings.  While the mezzanine has its own kitchen, the rest of the rooms can sit and eat in the common kitchen, but unfortunately, it can’t be used for meal prep.

Helpful Tip:  Ask for a room with a bathtub!

Good To Know:  Gluten-free travelers have one of Florence’s top senza glutine restaurants just across the street… Osteria dello Sgrano.

NUMA Palazzo Belfiore

Via dei Velluti, 8

NUMA Palazzo Belfiore -> info and rates.

I didn’t do a Palazzo Belfiore site inspection for this article, but I wanted to include it because it’s a classic for family stays in Florence (I’ve yet to stay here but have had clients and friends stay here).

There are multiple apartments that can sleep 6, plus you can add a crib to sleep 7.  Some of the apartments have unique features like wall frescoes or lofts (avoid the lofts with little ones).

It’s in a great location in the Oltrarno, just around the corner from Palazzo Pitti and the Boboli Gardens.

Helpful Tips:  You’re steps away from Gelateria della Passera, one of my favorite gelaterie in Florence.  And you’re also really close to a branch of the Ditta Artigianale, a kid-friendly coffee shop (with goodies like pastries and plenty of tables, room for a stroller, etc).

Location

  • ZTL – In the ZTL
  • Parking – Parking available in a nearby garage.
  • Distance from SMN train station – 20-25-minute walk with kids.
  • Neighborhood – Oltrarno, near Palazzo Pitti.  Close to plenty of restaurants and cafes and artisan shops on the ‘other’ side of the Arno River.  You’re still really close to the main sites on the north side of the river.
  • Walkable – Yes!  You can get everywhere you want to go on foot.

Family Safety

  • Windows and balconies – Window shutters can be closed.

Miscellaneous

  • Reception – No.  Digital check-in.
  • Laundry – Coin operated on-site
  • Noise – On a small street
  • Heat & Airconditioning – Both
  • Elevator or stairs – Stairs.  Apartments on different floors.  No elevator.
  • Crib available – Yes
  • High chair available – No
  • Luggage drop off and storage – No
  • Grocery Store – Conad less than 5 minutes away on foot.

Residenza d’Epoca In Piazza della Signoria

Via dei Magazzini, 2

Residenza d’Epoca in Piazza della Signoria -> info and rates.

These rooms and apartments are in a building on Piazza Signoria – a perfect location for exploring the city center.  The historic building has antique furniture and rooms are all different.

There are a few solutions for families here.

First, there are two apartments that work well for families.  One is a loft with stairs, so it’s best for older kids.  The apartments have a queen bed plus a sofa bed, and you can add a crib for a baby under 2 years old. Note that with the addition of a crib, it’s a tight space, but it can be done.

Second, smaller families can book a triple room and add a crib (for 4 people total).

Finally, there are two connecting rooms that give you a 2 bedroom and 2 bathroom setup.  You could also add a crib to fit 5 people total.  There’s also a hydro massage bath and Turkish sauna and shower.  This room setup doesn’t have a view, but you can always enjoy the view from the breakfast room.

Some rooms have bathtubs, so if you’re traveling with a baby or bathtub-loving kids, be sure to ask for one.

Location

  • ZTL – In the ZTL
  • Parking – Garage valet service available.  Cost: €35/night.
  • Distance from SMN train station – 20-25-minute walk with kids.

  • Windows and balconies – Window shutters can be closed.

Miscellaneous

  • Reception – Open from 9am-9pm, and other hours someone always available at the residence.
  • Breakfast – Plentiful spread set out in the breakfast room each morning.  Apartments have kitchens so you can also make your own breakfast.
  • Laundry – Paid service available from Monday – Friday.
  • Noise – Double-paned glass and two layers of windows keep noise from the piazza out.
  • Heat & Airconditioning – Both
  • Elevator or stairs – The elevator is tiny. 7 steps to arrive at elevator.
  • Strollers – You can leave your stroller at inside the entrance of the building.  The hotel takes up the entire building.
  • Crib available – Yes
  • High chair available – Yes
  • Luggage drop off and storage – Yes
  • Grocery Store – There’s a Carrefour Express just 2-minutes away on foot.
